Wojtek Mazolewski Solo | Concert

The Ethno Jazz Festival invites you on November 4th to the Gothic Hall at Stary Klasztor for a concert by Wojtek Mazolewski in an intimate, solo performance.

The album “Solo” by the leader of Pink Freud and the Wojtek Mazolewski Quintet is an intimate, atmospheric, almost cinematic story without words — a moving love story between the artist and his instrument.

The double bass is often an underrated instrument in jazz — since the days of Duke Ellington’s big band, it has been assigned the role of rhythmic foundation for the dazzling displays of trumpet, drum, and piano virtuosos. One might expect a solo album to be an opportunity for Mazolewski to show off his virtuosity. Instead, the Pink Freud leader chose a different kind of expression, presenting the double bass as a melodic instrument, with remarkable attentiveness — even tenderness — revealing the richness and depth of its sound.

“Solo” is a surprising record. Despite its subtle arrangements (harp, flute, percussion, gentle electronics, whispers), the album captivates from the very first bars. Mazolewski’s musical story draws you in and fascinates, unhurriedly revealing its sonic and compositional details. The musician opens up a space of focus and reflection, without slipping into new-age cliché.
