Urban Gardening Lessons: Let’s Talk About Water!

We’re back with another session in the “Urban Gardening Lessons” series! This time we’re tackling a topic no garden can go long without — WATER.

Longer dry spells and rising temperatures make it worth thinking not just about how much water we use, but above all how to keep it in the garden longer.

During the workshop we’ll talk about how to collect and store rainwater, how to water plants more sensibly, and what we can do so water doesn’t disappear from the garden right after it rains.

We’ll also look into the world of small- and large-scale water retention. There will be barrels, tanks, mulching, proper land shaping, and garden ponds — how to build a small pond that’s not just decorative but also a habitat for many organisms.

During the meeting you’ll learn:

– how to collect and use rainwater
– how to keep water in the soil longer
– what micro- and macro-retention are
– which water storage solutions work well in a garden
– how to water plants more effectively while using less water
– how water affects plants and the whole garden ecosystem
– how to plan and build your own garden pond

The workshop is split into a theoretical and a practical part. First we’ll cover the key information, then walk through the garden to see different ways of capturing and using water in action.

Maciej Makoś — a biology graduate of the University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wrocław, botanist, herbalist, and permaculture designer, who works in nature education. During the workshop he shares knowledge on topics close to his heart: ecology, foraging and processing herbs and wild edible plants, permaculture techniques in urban gardening, and the role of biodiversity in ecosystems. He is also the caretaker of the Community Garden at Wrocław’s Czasoprzestrzeń.
