Urban Gardening Lessons: Compost – the Gardener’s Black Gold

Compost – the gardener’s black gold! Anyone who has once seen what it can do wants as much of it as possible in their garden. The good news? Composting is far simpler than it might seem – and truly anyone can learn it.

If you are wondering: Is every compost equally valuable and equally supportive of plant growth? Does the composting process always have to take years, or can you get ready compost in just 3 months? Does a compost bin have to smell unpleasant? Can you compost without a bin, directly in the bed? How do you prepare an effective and completely free fertiliser? We will answer these and many other questions on 20 June at 2:30 PM during a meeting in the Czasoprzestrzeń community garden.

During the workshop you will learn: the basic properties of healthy soil; how to support the biodiversity of soil organisms; what composting methods exist and how they differ; what “hot” composting is; where to obtain valuable organic matter in urban conditions; and how to prepare a natural liquid manure for feeding plants.

Practical part: together we will create compost using the “hot” method, which makes organic matter break down much faster than in a traditional bin.

Host: Maciej Makos – a biology graduate of the Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences, botanist, herbalist and permaculture designer. He works in nature education, popularising knowledge of ecology, herbal medicine, wild edible plants, urban gardening and permaculture. Biodiversity and its importance for the functioning of ecosystems also hold a special place in his work. He is the keeper of the community garden at Czasoprzestrzen.
