The Best Diplomas in Media Art Competition, organised by WRO Art Centre and the Geppert Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw, has for years provided a platform for eight public art universities in Poland. Diploma committees each select one work – a representation of methods and sensibilities in thinking about media art. Brought together, they create not just a survey but a dynamic field of exchange.
This year’s edition is held under the motto superuser_do – a reference to the system command sudo, which allows the user to perform actions at administrator level. The exhibition treats artists as superusers: those who gain access to test, transform and negotiate the rules of how reality works. A diploma defence is a moment of transition from learning mode into independent practice. What unites all the works is a conscious analysis of the reality in which we function, and a readiness to intervene.
Fields of work include: imaging the relationship between humans and technology; sound from biological networks and water systems; corporate overload loops; intervening in image and registration tools; a queer archive processed by AI; and high fashion in the provinces.
Organisers: Geppert Academy of Fine Arts Wroclaw and WRO Art Centre. Co-organisers: art academies in Gdansk, Krakow, Katowice, Lodz, Poznan, Szczecin, Warsaw. Partners: IP Studio, Contemporary Lynx, Magazyn SZUM, MINT Magazine.
