Piotr Wojtasik VOICES

Głosy Kultury (Voices of Culture) is an exceptional artistic-educational project of the Lower Silesian Music Society. The event aims to commemorate the achievements of an institution that for decades helped shape the artistic landscape of post-war Wrocław and the region, developed music education, and united the musical community of Lower Silesia. This evening will feature the pieces collected on the album VOICES by Piotr Wojtasik – one of the most outstanding Polish jazz trumpeters.

VOICES comprises six pieces for the Choir of the White Stork Synagogue conducted by Stanisław Rybarczyk, and Piotr Wojtasik’s quintet featuring Marcin Kaletka, Piotr Wyleżoł, Michał Barański and Kazimierz Jonkisz, together with Magdalena Zawartko – who employs numerous vocal techniques, from classical to ethnic singing – and the outstanding harpist Julia Ziembińska. It is a wonderful example of musical worlds intermingling, merging into varied images and spaces. Each composition reveals a somewhat metaphysical landscape of the composer’s output: elements of jazz, classical music, funk and ethnic music can all be found within it. They were created during a particular period in the artist’s life and work, which is clearly reflected in their sound. The project’s most essential value is its emotional – almost spiritual – layer, palpable above all during live encounters. The concert will conclude with a performance of the Hymn of the Lower Silesian Music Society, composed by Professor Leszek Wisłocki and arranged by Mateusz Walach.

The Głosy Kultury project is not only a summary of eighty years of the Lower Silesian Music Society’s activity, but also a celebration of community, education and culture, which for generations have formed the foundation of the institution’s mission. During the concert, distinctions and awards will be presented to individuals particularly dedicated to the association’s work. The event will be hosted by Igor Pietraszewski, a sociologist and musician, assistant professor at the Institute of Sociology of the University of Wrocław, who researches the sociology of music and the sociology of memory. He is the author of the book Jazz w Polsce, wolność improwizowana (Jazz in Poland, Improvised Freedom), and a long-time member of the artistic council of the Jazz on the Odra festival. Other outstanding artists will also take part: orchestras, choirs and youth ensembles. We will hear the Cantilena Chamber Male Choir, the Musical Theatre Youth Academy, and school brass bands from Primary School No. 118, the Don Bosco Salesian School Complex, and Primary School No. 64, participating in the Wszystko gra (Everything’s in Tune) project.

The project is financed from the budget of the City of Wrocław.
