Open-Air Cinema: Five Devils (dir. Lea Mysius)

From the “it’s been a while” series – the return of open-air cinema to our beach.

“Five Devils” (Piec diablow) is a true feast for the senses. Lea Mysius’s film is a visually refined, dazzling and wild love story that unexpectedly also stirs our sense of smell.

Young Vicki has an extraordinary gift: she can catch, remember and recreate every possible scent, which she collects in carefully labelled jars. Among them, a special place is held by those devoted to the scent of her mother, Joanne (Adele Exarchopoulos, known from Blue Is the Warmest Colour). Their seemingly orderly life is disrupted by the appearance of Julia, the long-unseen, mysterious sister of Joanne’s husband. Intrigued by her aunt’s unexpected visit, Vicki “steals” her scent and discovers that through it she can travel into Julia’s past, learning her family’s long-hidden secrets. Fiery romances, broken hearts and dormant emotions come to light.

Five Devils is a story that pulses with underlying tension, draws you in like the best thriller and boldly joins an unobvious tale of love with parapsychological fantasy. Behind the camera stood one of the most interesting contemporary French directors – Lea Mysius, creator of Ava (awarded in Cannes and Toronto, among others) and co-writer of the screenplay for Paris, 13th District.

The screening’s speaker will also be Adam Krosnicki-Midon: cinema-goer, cinephile, programmer at Kino Nowe Horyzonty, admin of Godardowskie Igraszki.
