Musical “1989”

The musical “1989” comes to Wroclaw! A spectacular co-production by the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Krakow and the Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre arrives at Hala Stulecia on 17 September 2026!

“1989”, directed by Katarzyna Szyngiera, takes its form from the American show “Hamilton”. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s revolutionary musical brought rap to Broadway, offering a fresh way of telling history that appeals to young and older audiences alike. The sound of this musical was created by one of Poland’s best rap producers, Andrzej Mikosz “Webber”, known for his long-standing collaboration with “Łona”.

“1989” shows the fall of communism from a new perspective. Events known from newsreels and history textbooks come to life on stage, seen through the eyes of three fascinating couples. In the lives of the Frasyniuk, Wałęsa and Kuroń families, ideals compete with love, enthusiasm clashes with the weight of history, and heroism is intertwined with family tragedy. The audience follows the characters through iconic moments – shipyard strikes and the Round Table talks – as well as intimate moments of joy and pain lived out in communist-era flats and prison cells.

In the three years since its premiere, the musical has received numerous awards and honours, including the Polityka Passport and a Fryderyk award. It sold out every one of its more than 200 performances, was broadcast on public television, and a recording of its songs was released, immediately topping Poland’s best-selling album charts.
