Macy Gray | Concert

Macy Gray — an unmistakable voice that has defined contemporary soul for more than two decades

Her distinctive, slightly raspy voice couldn’t be mistaken for anyone else’s. Macy Gray, GRAMMY® winner, author of the worldwide hit “I Try,” and one of the most striking personalities in contemporary R&B and soul, has consistently followed her own artistic path for over two decades.

In Macy Gray’s music, honesty meets an uncompromising spirit, and classic soul, funk and jazz sounds blend with contemporary production. From the start of her career, the artist has proven she needs neither formulas nor safe choices. Her work remains personal, emotional and instantly recognizable.

Originally from Canton, Ohio, Gray moved to Los Angeles to study screenwriting at the University of Southern California. A music career wasn’t originally part of her plan. She started out writing songs for friends, and discovered her own voice by accident when a singer who was supposed to record a demo she had written failed to show up at the studio. That’s when one of the most distinctive voices of turn-of-the-century music was born.

Her breakthrough came in 1999 with the release of her debut album “On How Life Is.” The record went triple platinum, and its single “I Try” became an international hit, earning her the GRAMMY® for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Over her career, Macy Gray has received five GRAMMY® nominations in total, won two BRIT Awards, and sold more than 25 million albums worldwide.

Over the years she has collaborated with artists including Ariana Grande, Bobby Brown, the band Galactic, and many respected producers and musicians. Her concerts draw audiences on nearly every continent, and Gray remains an artist equally at home on an intimate club stage or in front of an audience of thousands.

Her work reaches far beyond music. Macy Gray has appeared in numerous film and TV productions, including Tyler Perry’s award-winning “For Colored Girls,” the series “Fuller House,” the films “Brotherly Love” and “Cardboard Boxer,” and the iconic “Training Day” alongside Denzel Washington.

In 2023, together with The California Jet Club, she released the album “The Reset.” The record was created as a response to the social and emotional consequences of the pandemic, political division, and the need to redefine human relationships. On the album, Gray touches on themes of loneliness, disappointment, resilience, freedom, and finding your place in a changing world.

The album included tracks such as “Thinking of You,” “America,” “Alien,” “Disco Song” and “Undone.” Each reveals a different side of the artist — from intimate, reflective ballads, through socially engaged lyrics, to energetic compositions inspired by club music, funk and disco.

In 2024, Macy Gray once again made her mark on the music scene with the single “I AM,” recorded together with Big Freedia. A track pulsing with energy and rooted in the New Orleans bounce tradition, it’s an affirming statement of self-acceptance, authenticity, and the right to live life on your own terms. Its message is simple but timely: everyone has the right to be themselves and feel proud of who they are.

Macy Gray remains an artist hard to pin down. She’s a vocalist, songwriter, producer, actress and activist who has never been afraid to speak up about socially important issues. Her music draws on a long tradition of R&B, soul, blues and jazz, while staying fresh, bold and forward-looking.

After more than two decades on stage, Macy Gray continues to captivate audiences — not only with her exceptional voice but also with her artistic independence. In a world full of carefully crafted images, she remains herself: honest, unpredictable, and utterly unmistakable.
