How Do Young People See Lower Silesia? Exhibition of Original Posters at Centennial Hall
WROCŁAW. How do you show your own hometown on a poster? Young people from five Lower Silesian municipalities searched for an answer, drawing inspiration from the Polish Poster School, local heritage, and contemporary graphic design. On September 18, an exhibition presenting 29 works created as part of the “Poster Academy 4.0” project will open at Centennial Hall in Wrocław. The official opening of the exhibition will take place on September 18 at 11:00 AM. The exhibition will be open to visitors until October 1.
The posters feature both recognizable places in the region, such as the Srebrna Góra Fortress, the Leaning Tower in Ząbkowice Śląskie, and the Palace of Marianne of Orange, as well as less obvious motifs: bees, paragliders, glass mosaics, local cheeses, and forest spirits (leszy). The works show what the young participants considered characteristic, important, or intriguing about their towns and immediate surroundings.
The project “Poster Academy 4.0: supporting the cultural and digital competences of young people and cultural staff in areas at risk of exclusion” was aimed at young people from Lower Silesian towns that were affected by the 2024 floods or have limited access to cultural offerings.
“We didn’t want to give young people a ready-made recipe for a good poster. It was important to us that participants got to know different ways of visual communication, and then decided for themselves what and how they wanted to say about the places they come from. As a result, the works that emerged are very diverse, personal, and far from typical town promotion,” says Marcin Skrabka, owner of Good Books.
From Idea to Poster
The work began with local classes on the history of the poster, visual communication, and the phenomenon of the Polish Poster School. Participants then traveled to Wrocław, where they visited the Four Domes Pavilion and Centennial Hall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The final works were created during workshops at Centennial Hall. Under the guidance of a professional graphic designer, the young people developed their own concepts, working with composition, typography, imagery, and both manual and digital techniques.
The project also included training for Lower Silesian cultural and education staff on using posters and visual activities in work with young people.
