wROCK for Freedom invites you on 29 August to Stary Klasztor for an evening with the greatest hits of 1980s Polish rock, titled “Chcemy być sobą!”
46 years ago, on 31 August 1980, the first independent self-governing trade union in Central and Eastern Europe, “Solidarność” (“Solidarity”), was founded, beginning a turbulent decade that ended with the fall of communism, the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and a new European and world order.
The 1980s were also the “golden era” of Polish rock. Perfect, Dżem, Lady Pank, Budka Suflera, Maanam, Lombard, Bajm – the whole of Poland sang these bands’ songs.
Soon joining the icons of Polish rock were bands like Sztywny Pal Azji, Chłopcy z Placu Broni, Kobranocka, Oddział Zamknięty, IRA, Brygada Kryzys, Kult, Republika with Grzegorz Ciechowski, Klaus Mittfoch with Lech Janerka, and many others whose songs we still remember today.
The 46th anniversary of the founding of Solidarity is a great occasion for an intergenerational gathering and a reminder of the best of 1980s Polish rock. There will also be plenty of opportunities for group singalongs of these timeless hits. The musical memorial evening will be led by the WrocLove Band, well known to Stary Klasztor audiences, under the direction of Marek “Sting” Popow.
